A middle-sized company improves its managers' vigilance and performance by winning their agreement to an effective system for delegating authority.

A company in the food-distribution business asked us to set up a system for delegating authority so that its Chairman could avoid legal risks in areas not under his/her direct control, i.e., subcontracting, health, and safety. Since such delegations transfer criminal liability to the assignees, some of the staff were reluctant to sign them. However, their consent was essential for the viability of the project.

Issues

> To ensure the reliability of the delegations of authority established
> To clarify the roles and criminal liabilities of all concerned
> To increase the vigilance of the assignees, for better risk prevention

Solution

> We demonstrated the positive aspects of a better assignment of responsibilities.
> We organized specific training courses covering each area assigned.
> We provided a guideline for all assignees.
> By explaining each person's role we were able to convince the assignees to sign the delegations of authority.

Results

Our firm's teaching skills enabled all of the actors in the company to understand their responsibilities and establish proper relationships with their teams, thereby becoming able to plan for the risks inherent in their activities.
